Peabody MA History Collection

The Peabody Institute Library founded in 1852, from a donation from George Peabody is one of the oldest public libraries in Massachusetts. The Peabody Star was a newspaper in Peabody that was published every Saturday by the Peabody Star Publishing Company with A. Moreland Fultz as the manager. The paper various stories and news from not only Peabody but from around the world. It is unclear when it ceases to publish. The newspapers office was located at 21 Lowell Street with a Boston office at 40 Appleton Street.  A subscription as $1.50 per year or $1 for eight months. A single issue cost 5 ¢.

Political mailer for the reelection of Mayor Philip C. O'Donnell. Mayor O'Donnell was the eighth mayor of Peabody. According to the book The Peabody Story , which was published in 1973 O'Donnell was the only mayor, at the time, to be elected to a fourth and fifth term.  He was first elected in 1951 and served until 1961. He is best known for the helping to construct the North Shore Mall.

Typed transcription of "The fourteenth anniversary of the Sunday School held the 3th Sunday of November 1867" from the Universalist Church in Peabody. The original report may have been written by Jacob or Sophie Bodge. The two page document was transcribed from a six page handwritten report. The report provides the statistics of the church's Sunday School. Also provides information about what was taught and a breakdown of how many boys and girls went to the school and attended.

The Danvers Courier was published by George R. Carlton of Danvers, MA. It was a weekly publication that was first published on Vol. 1, no. 1 (Mar. 15, 1845) and ceased publication in 1849. It was published simultaneously in South Danvers [Peabody], Mass. The newspapers here is the third (3rd) volume from number 8 to number 50 and cover the years 1847 March 22 to 1848 March 11. Hazel Elizabeth Durkee, class photo from Peabody High School for the year of 1915. Born Dec. 3, 1897, daughter of Edwin A. and Norah (Kennedy) Durkee. He was a farmer at her birth but by the time of her graduation he had a store located at his home--Durkee Brothers--at the corner of Goodale and Lowell.  Hazel married Valentine Bagley Evans in Woburn on June 25, 1921. Evans worked as a picture framer in Woburn where they made their home.
